  14. Ibrahim Shekarau Former Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has advised the All Progressive Congress (APC) to field a southerner as its presidential candidate in 2023. Shekarau gave this advice in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday. He pointed out that the idea is to ensure justice and fairness. He stated that although rotational presidency is not written in APC’s constitution, he believes it is desirable for justice and fairness. Also Read: INEC Fixes Dates For Ekiti, Osun Guber Polls “For instance, the present six geopolitical zones are not reflected in Nigeria’s constitution, but it is a good arrangement. You cannot implement any policy in Nigeria without taking geopolitical zones into consideration. “This is also the same with rotating the presidency between the North and the South. If we ignore power shift, we are not being fair to ourselves and we are not fair to history. In my opinion, power shift is necessary for all Nigerians to have a sense of belonging. “I am of the opinion that, we should exercise patience and bring our brothers from the South close to us. “You see, the North alone cannot produce the votes enough for the president. Likewise the South, it is only when we come together. My believe is not only geopolitical regions, there is no state in the federation that does not have a competent person to lead this country. “Violating this arrangement will further divide Nigerians. Some will feel neglected or rejected,” Mr Shekarau said.
  15. Garba Shehu The presidency says governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are sad over the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria because it has affected their ability to spread “fake news.” Recall that the PDP governors’ forum, in a communique on Monday, tackled the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration over its decision to indefinitely suspend Twitter in Nigeria. Also Read: Twitter Rejected Nigeria’s Demand To Block Nnamdi Kanu’s Account– Lai Mohammed Reacting to the statement on Wednesday, presidential aide, Garba Shehu said that the communique issued by the PDP governors shows to Nigerians “why this party and its representatives should not be entrusted with the national leadership of our country any time soon”. “The PDP grieves over the Federal Government’s action over Twitter – for it represents the curtailment of their ability to use the platform to spread fake news and invented stories to the detriment of community and good-neighbourliness between the peoples of Nigeria,” Shehu said. “The PDP Governors propose no solutions to any of our nation’s challenges in the face of COVID and global economic downturn: instead, they grasp for more money and mourn their lack of access to social media to spread falsehoods and hate. “Their statement is evidence, if any were needed, as to why the President and the APC ended the PDP’s one-party rule in 2015, were re-elected by an increased margin in 2019, and why their winning trend is set to continue far into the future.”
  16. Francis Atuche, a former Managing Director (MD) of Bank PHB and Ugo Anyanwu, a former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the bank, have been sentenced for N25.7 billion fraud. Ikeja High Court on Wednesday was tensed, as Anyanwu begged Justice Lateefa Okunnu not to send him to prison following his conviction. Atuche and Ugo Anyanwu, were both found guilty of 22 of the 27 counts of conspiracy and stealing charge proffered against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2011. The wife of Atuche, Elizabeth, who faced trial alongside the duo, was found not guilty of two counts of conspiracy and stealing brought against her. After Atuche and Anyanwu’s conviction, the judge asked if they had any plea to make. They answered in the affirmative. Addressing the court, Atuche begged not to be sent to jail. He prayed Okunnu to temper justice with mercy. “All the time I was the MD of Bank PHB, I gave my all to the bank. “Never at any material time did it occur to me that I would set up a scheme to defraud the bank. “I plead for mercy, leniency, your kindness, and I plead that out of your kindness and generosity, you will not allow me to go to jail. “I am sorry and remorseful,” he said. Atuche told the court that as a professional banker and chartered accountant, he certainly did not want to become a convict. “I pray that God will place in your heart to be kind. “I plead from the bottom of my heart. I’m extremely sorry; today will be a turning point in my life, I’m very sorry,” he begged. Also Atuche’s counsel, Mr Paul Nneoma, in his plea for mercy, described Atuche as a responsible family man who had never been convicted of any crime. He appealed to the court to give Atuche a fine instead of prison sentence. Anyanwu also told the court that he was barely a year old when he lost his mother . “What I achieved in the banking industry is by stint of hard work. I have suffered in the last 10 years of this trial. “I am sorry if I was appearing cocky in the witness box during my examination-in-chief. “I have two kids who are barely teenagers. They look up to their father, and I wonder what kind of impact this will have on them. “Please temper justice with mercy,” Anyanwu prayed. Anyanwu’s counsel, Mr Silva Ogwemoh (SAN), also begged for mercy on his client. He said that one of Anyanwu’s children had a medical condition requiring special attention. He added that Anyanwu was hypertensive, urging that the court should take judicial notice of the COVID-19 pandemic and impose a fine on him instead of custodial sentence. Reacting to the pleas of the defendants, EFCC team led by Mr Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), requested for a stiff sentence as well as an order of restitution against the convicts. He said that Lagos State Government spent much funds and resources prosecuting the case in the past 10 years. “We were taken to the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court several times by the defendants. “During the trial, they were rude and cocky. That is not remorse, the third defendant (Anyanwu) decided to hold unto his loyalty to his boss (Atuche) against his loyalty to the state. “We pray the court imposes the maximum sentence and orders restitution,” he said. Mrs Okunnu eventually sentenced Mr Atuche to six years’ jail term and gave Mr Anyanwu four years’ imprisonment. On the charge of conspiracy against Mrs Atuche, the judge held that there was no evidence that linked her to the shares bought for the two companies affiliated with her. Mrs Atuche, who was reciting prayers with a rosary during proceedings, heaved a sigh of relief upon hearing the verdict.

  18. A master degree graduate of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Ella Williams, has been allegedly shot dead by suspected herdsmen along the Benin-Ekpoma expressway. Ella was travelling from Benin City to Ekpoma to pickup her call-up letter when her vehicle was attacked by gunmen who opened fire, killing her on the spot while other passengers were kidnapped. The incident happened on Monday, as shared by a Facebook user identified as Asomba Andrew Egbuonu. He wrote; “I received the devastating news of the demise of a young lady and a promising future of the Nigerian nation, Miss Ella Williams, in the hands of bloodthirsty and heartless Herdsmen on the Benin – Ekpoma Road in Edo State” Miss Williams who has just graduated with a Masters in Architecture from Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, was said to have traveled from her Benin base to pick up her Call-up. She never made it back as her vehicle was attacked by murderous marauders who ambushed vehicles by opening fire on them with their small arms (aka AK47 Assault guns) killing her on the spot. What a country where human lives have no value, especially to these emotion-less invaders. All over Nigeria, criminals and kidnappers plan and find ways of stopping vehicle before kidnappings their victims. This appears to be too much work for these roaming marauders who prefer to use their bullets indiscriminately to stop vehicles on highways, killing the drivers and any other unfortunate passengers, before kidnapping the leftover survivors and herding them into our vast ungoverned bushes and forests. That this modus operandi has been used repeatedly with almost no consequence for these criminals is unacceptable. The Nigerian Government under the watch of our President cannot continue to claim helplessness and reign as Nigeria’s best are wasted all over Nigeria. Where is the great and valiant Nigerian Army (and our Armed Forces) that used to be respected all over the African Region. How has our great Armed Forces suddenly turned into such impotence and inability to go into the brushes to flush out neutralize these bloodthirsty elements. I honestly cannot fathom all these happening in my great country except there is some unexplained collusion, and the deliberate looking of the other way (and I sincerely pray this is not the case). Miss Williams is gone, lost to a nation in need of her brightest and best. Her parents are heartbroken; her friends and colleagues in deep shock; her killers are out their still demanding and waiting to collect ransom from the surviving passengers from last week’s murderous and senseless kidnapping; and the Nigerian State moves on as it is business as usual to our Rulers. Rest in peace sister! May this Government not leave this as their most remembered legacy.
