  1. An Uyo state High Court has charged Nollywood actor, Moses Armstrong with rape, conspiracy, intimidation and supplying of drugs to procure abortion. The four charges were read to Moses for the first time since he was first arrested on June 13, defense counsel, Emmanuel Pantaleon, told PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday. The prosecution, I.U. Robert, an assistant state counsel, while opposing bail application, cited relevant judicial authorities and urged the court to dismiss the application which he described as an “abuse of court process.” The Judge, Ntong Ntong, after hearing submissions from both counsels upheld the defense counsel’s application and granted bail to Mr Armstrong in the sum of N5 million. A Magistrate Court Judge, Moreen Udoka had last month struck out the case for lack of jurisdiction after she was briefed by the prosecution that the case has been entered at a High Court in the state. The first Judge, Samuel Ukoima, whose court Mr Armstrong was first arraigned on June 17, had also struck out the prosecution’s remand application on the basis that it was not properly filed. Ukoima ordered that the actor be rearrested after the case had been properly filed. The alleged victim, who was said to have been schooling abroad, returned to the country recently and petitioned Martha Udom Emmanuel, the wife of the state governor with respect to the r*pe allegation. 2. A 12-year-old boy has shot dead his Nigerian mum in their home in Alabama in the United States of America. The boy who has since confessed to accidentally shooting his mother, a Nigerian woman, after initially claiming an intruder killed her in their US home. Ayobiyi Cook, a 29-year-old registered nurse who friends called ‘Yo-Yo’, was found dead in the family’s Forestdale, Alabama home, on the 2400 block of Freemont Avenue after midnight on August 6. Her son had originally told police that an intruder had entered their house, shot his mother and then ran away. “The child originally fabricated a story that detectives determined was not possible,” Deputy Chief David Agee said. “After investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives were able to determine that the victim’s 12-year-old son unintentionally discharged a firearm striking his mother causing her death. “After more probing, the boy finally changed his story. “The child eventually gave a true account of what happened,” Agee said. “Evidence on the scene supports that the shooting was unintentional and the offense will be addressed through the Family Court system. The family has been cooperative throughout the process and the child will remain with them.” Related
  3. Former Plateau State governor, Joshua Dariye, is set to declare interest to join the contest for the Plateau Central senatorial seat on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), Daily Trust reports. He and his Taraba counterpart, Jolly Nyame, were on Monday, released from Kuje correctional facility in Abuja. He was serving a 14-year sentence after being convicted for corruption. According to Daily Trust, reliable sources said the Plateau State chapter of LP has concluded arrangements to receive Dariye from Abuja to pick the party’s senatorial form. He had won a senatorial seat in 2011 on the platform of LP after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under which he served as governor. A Labour Party official, who craved anonymity told Daily Trust; “Yes, it is true that he (Dariye) will be running for a Senate seat. We are making arrangements for him to come from Abuja for the senatorial declaration.” The source reportedly declared confidence in the former lawmaker’s ability to spring surprises at the polls because he remained loved by many in the state, adding that Dariye has also given a boost to the governorship bid of the party’s governorship candidate, Patrick Dakum, who defected to the Labour Party, from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). 7. A member of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, Ugochukwu Nnadi has disclosed that the importation of used vehicles into Nigeria has declined since the introduction of the Vehicle Identification Number, VIN, by the Nigeria Customs Service. Nnadi also claimed that the policy had made it difficult for Nigerians to afford second-hand or used vehicles. “Yes, there is a drop in the importation of used vehicles generally. In fact, by the time those whose vehicles were already at the ports before this VIN valuation would clear all their products at the ports, the drop might rise further. “Some people’s vehicles are already at the ports and they don’t have any option than to manage to bring them out.” Clearing agents have supported Nandi’s position, explaining that the non-exclusion of ‘accident’ or ‘accidented’ vehicles on the VIN platform for the valuation of imported vehicles and hike in foreign exchange had discouraged many importers from bringing in damaged vehicles. The Ports & Terminal Multipurpose Limited Chapter Chairman of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, George Okafor, said that accidented vehicles were still being treated as normal vehicles, explaining that this could be the cause of the reduction in imports. “The issue of accidented is not yet captured in the new vehicle registration, which has been the problem because ‘accident’ vehicles are still being treated as normal vehicles. As at now, there is no particular information on accidented vehicles. What we are doing now is the vehicle registration system valuation, so there is nothing in the system for accidented vehicles for now.” Also speaking, the TinCan Island Chapter Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, Ojo Akintoye, blamed the hike in foreign exchange as the reason for the reduction. “The reason is not far from the hike in foreign exchange rate. I bought a Toyota Corolla when the dollar rate was less than N500. I bought that for about $3000. Now, the same car is over $5000 with the hike in exchange rate. When you bring the car back to Nigeria, you will still spend money to buy spare parts and put the car in order. So, all these cost a lot of money.” Related

He said: ‘The season at Chelsea gave me extra motivation to do even better than before. I think in one year everyone has forgotten about the things I am capable of doing on the pitch. ‘That is a kind of anger that I have inside me. That now the team has it too, which didn’t win last year, all together we hope to do better and bring something home.’ When asked what went wrong at Stamford Bridge, he responded: ‘So many things. I think before, when I left, I wanted to take revenge at Chelsea because when I was young it was my team for 11 years. I had the opportunity to go back there and thought I would be a hero, but that wasn’t the case. ‘In March, when I heard there was an opportunity to come back here, slowly I didn’t say anything, but toward the end of the season we did a very good job with the club and I was able to come back here. ‘I make reflections only at the end of the season, so after the last game I put myself to think what my situation was. ‘I saw that as a player with Inter I did well, the season at Chelsea for me was difficult. I had no doubts, that’s why I made the decision to come back here.’ Related

This reminder is pertinent in light of rumours making the rounds that a special auction of over 7000 cars will soon be held by the Service. Applicant must have a valid tax identification number (TIN) issued by Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) with an active e-mail account for the issued TIN.
