The alleged real boyfriend of the corps member who killed a man in Akwa Ibom state has finally broken his silence.
Henry Obiakwa claims to be the real boyfriend of Princess Odume, the corps member who allegedly killed a young man in Akwa Ibom on Sunday with a machete.

According to Obiakwa, Odume is not capable of committing such a crime.
Odume was stripped naked and beaten after she was allegedly apprehended for killing the deceased. The police later arrived at the scene and took her to the station.
In an interview with SaharaReporters on Monday, Obiakwa said he did not think Odume was capable of committing the offence.
Obiakwa said he had been in a relationship with Odume for over a year though he added that the relationship was shaky because of the long distance between them.
According to Obiakwa, Odume is a very peaceful woman who is not violent. He said when she is angry, she keeps quiet.
He said, “We started dating two years ago. Though I live far away and you know how long-distance relationships can be. I came back last October for a traditional wedding which I invited her to attend with me and she came. We never broke up just that the relationship is no longer how it is supposed to be.
“Since I have known her, she has never been a violent person. Whenever she is angry, all she does is to keep quiet. I don’t think she can kill someone except she says it herself.”
Obiakwa also said he lives in Lagos, while Odume who was living in Enugu with her family, was recently posted to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State for her one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps programme.
When asked if she ever told him of any threat to her life by anyone, Obiakwa said there was nothing of such.
“She never told me anything about this other guy though I spoke with her four days ago before I travelled to Ondo where I get my wares from. She also never told me of any threat to her life,” he said.
Obiakwa said he had called the mother of the accused person, who told him she was on her way to Uyo, where her daughter is being detained.
Also speaking, Emilia Sophia, a friend of Odume, said she believed her friend was being set up and that she could never kill anyone.
“She’s my very good friend and I strongly believe that she can’t do something like that. I believe they set her up, she can’t be so heartless to slaughter someone like that,” she said.
When asked if Odume had told her about any threat to her life, Sophie said Odume had posted something similar on Facebook though she (Sophie) never got the details.
“Yes, she actually said someone was trying to kill her. I tried to find out what happened from her but she told me that the problem had been solved. I didn’t know how serious she was then,” she said.
Sophia also confirmed that she only knew Obiakwa as Odume’s boyfriend, adding that she did not know the relationship her friend had with the young man who was murdered.

On Sunday, January 10, a youth corper identified as Princess Pascaline Odume, was arrested by the police for allegedly killing a man identified as Japhet Akwaowo.
Odume alleged that she killed the man in self-defense after he threatened to kill her after she refused to remove her clothes so that he could have sex with her. read here
In a viral video shared online, Effiong alleged that the man who was killed by Odume also raped her in 2017 when she was 18.
    She said;
”My name Effiong Laurel Scott and I am from Akwa Ibom state. I heard about the incident that took place here in Uyo of the girl that butchered the guy to bits and pieces. I heard about it a few days ago but I did not think much of it until yesterday.
I was just scrolling through Facebook and I saw a comment on the post that stated ‘Even if it was a rape case, why would she kill the guy?’.
That caught my attention and I went through the post and I started reading through and this was the girl’s side of the story that said the guy tried to rape her.
I was like let me see the girl’s photo and the guy’s photo.
As God would have it, it turns out that this was the guy that raped me in 2017, July 17th to be precise in Etinan local government.”
The lady gave details of how she met the man and the incident that followed.
”My family and I came back to Akwa Ibom in 2012. I grew up in Maiduguri. Due to the security, insurgency and all that, we came back to Akwa Ibom state.
My dad was transferred top Etinan and we moved to Etinan to be with him. I celebrated my 18th birthday on May 11 and this incident happened in July. I was on my way out on a bike. This guy trailed me on the bike and came to me. He stopped the bike that I was on. He got the number. This guy is actually a rapist and a killer.
He is not just a rapist, He is a serial rapist.
So this guy met me. He sounded so sound. The guy was like since you are in a haste, just give me your number. When you come back we would get to see and talk. Me too I was in a haste so I was like let me just give him my number, it’s not like I was going to pick his call.
On my way back home, when I was on the exact spot that he met me to get my number, my phone rang and I picked up and he was like where are you?. I told him I was where he saw me. By this time, this was around 6.30 in the evening. In Etinan, by 6pm, everybody is already on their way home or in their houses.  It is already late and almost dark.
He told me to stop by a filling station. I stopped by and stood beside it. Listen to the storyline so that you would know that the whole ””jazz” thing that the girl said is true and it is realistic. It is very very true that the guy uses ”jazz” on his victims. He hypnotises them.
He told me that he told his Aunty that I was coming by to visit him. I was  still having some sense in me. I was like no I cannot come to your house, I just met you. This guy kept on convincing me. We stood on that spot and kept on convincing me. At a time I was like, Okay, let me just waste my own time, let me go with this guy.
The road he entered and started taking me through was a bush track. He took me through that road and in my mind, I was like what are we doing here exactly. By the time we got into the house, the house was like a deserted place.
So I got into the house and the moment I saw it, I said I can’t stay here. So I got up and told him I was going, maybe I would come another time. I reached for the door. Lo and Behold, the door was locked.
As I turned my back to ask him to open the door, this guy got a matchete and a pen knife. He told me in that girl’s exact words that he will rape me and kill me and nobody will know about it and nobody will do anything about it. Yes! Those were his exact words to me too. No single thing changed.
I begged as an 18 year old. I begged. I cried. What didn’t I do that day. I begged him. I was literally crying.
Fine, he still had his way with me. He had his way with me not once, twice. to be precise I got back home that night around 11pm. I snucked into the house, I had my bath. I cried my eyes. I cried for days.”
Effiong said she only told her elder sister as she revealed that the man also threatened her elder sister after he got to know.
”The only person I was able to tell this thing to then was my elder sister. Somehow he got to know that my elder sister knew about it. He started threatening her from that time. This guy’s name is Akwaowo Japheth. That is his name. Quote me. I am the one saying it. This guy’s name is Akwaowo Japheth. I can vouch on my life that that girl did not just want to murder him.”he said
In the video, Effiong said that she is very happy that the man died a painful death. She also encouraged other victims of the man to speaker while insisting that the coroner killed the man in self-defense.

Controversial Nigerian author and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has urged Nigerians to open up if any of their relative die from COVID-19.

Reno Omokri tells people what to do if their relatives die from COVID-19 As the second wave of the COVID-10 pandemic looms in the country, Reno Omokri has cautioned his fans to be very careful about how they live their lives because the virus is real and it is taking lives.
The trained Lawyer said it is not shameful to contract or for someone in your family to die of COVID-19 thus they should not be shy to divulge the information so people can learn from it.
    According to him;

The defence headquarters (DHQ) has stated that the armed forces have ”checkmated” Boko Haram and their operations in the north-eastern part of Nigeria.

Despite claims that the insurgents have been decimated, some parts of the north-eastern region still come under attack, but during an interview with NAN on Monday, John Enenche, coordinator of defence media operations, said the federal government and the military since 2015 had checked the intensity of terrorist activities across the country — particularly in the north-east.
According to Enenche, the initial delay in tackling the menace made it gain momentum — Boko Haram taking over territories and setting up administrative structures — before they were knocked off in 2016.
Enenche said history has shown that terrorism “is a very resilient type of enemy activity”, adding that the type of terrorism in Nigeria is not “a smart one” but rooted in the state of mind of a group of people.

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has said the military has “taken control” of his house after “it jumped over the fence”.
Wine is taking on President Yoweri Museveni who is seeking his sixth term in office.

Bobi Wine tweeted the news just hours after he alleged Thursday’s election was rigged, saying “every legal option is on the table” to challenge the official results.

Earlier journalists traveling to Wine’s residence for a press conference were turned back by security forces well before reaching his home. Many reporters were also forced to leave the national election tally center, despite having accreditation.
The electoral commission said earlier on Friday that Museveni, who is seeking a sixth term, led in Thursday’s vote with results in from 29 percent of polling stations.
With 29.4% of ballots counted, Mr Museveni has won 63.9% of the vote compared to Bobi Wine with 28.4%, the electoral commission says.

US president Donald Trump has been impeached for the 2nd time by the House of Representatives.
The President was impeached over his role in inciting the deadly insurrection on the US Capitol last week.

Trump impeached for the 2nd time
Mr Trump has become the first president in US history to be impeached for a second time during their time in office.
As many as 10 Republicans voted to impeachment the president.
The 10 Republicans who did their job and voted to impeach are:
Liz Cheney (WY) Adam Kinzinger (IL) Jamie Herrera Beutler (WA) John Katko (NY) Peter Meijer (Ml) Dan Newhouse (WA) Anthony Gonzalez (OH) Tom Rice (SC) Fred Upton (MI) David Valadao (CA)
The impeachment charges will now move to a trial in the Senate, but it is unclear how the trial will proceed, or whether it will commence before Mr Trump leaves office on January 20 and Joe Biden is sworn in.
A two-thirds majority of the 100 senators would be needed to convict the president on the charges and remove him from office.
However, in the Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is not planning to bring the Senate back for a trial before January 19, meaning the trial won’t begin until Trump is out of office and Biden has been sworn in, CNN reports.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has revealed that banning US President Danskd Trump was the right thing to do after a clear warning.
In a Twitter thread made by Jack, he said that he did not celebrate or feel pride in banning Donald Trump on his platform.
He also stated that the banning came  following a clear warning and that the decision was made based on threat to physical safety both on and off Twitter.
His statement reads; “I do not celebrate or feel pride in our having to ban @realDonaldTrump from Twitter, or how we got here. After a clear warning we’d take this action, we made a decision with the best information we had based on threats to physical safety both on and off Twitter. Was this correct?
“I believe this was the right decision for Twitter. We faced an extraordinary and untenable circumstance, forcing us to focus all of our actions on public safety. Offline harm as a result of online speech is demonstrably real, and what drives our policy and enforcement above all.
“That said, having to ban an account has real and significant ramifications. While there are clear and obvious exceptions, I feel a ban is a failure of ours ultimately to promote healthy conversation. And a time for us to reflect on our operations and the environment around us.
“Having to take these actions fragment the public conversation. They divide us. They limit the potential for clarification, redemption, and learning. And sets a precedent I feel is dangerous: the power an individual or corporation has over a part of the global public conversation.
“The check and accountability on this power has always been the fact that a service like Twitter is one small part of the larger public conversation happening across the internet. If folks do not agree with our rules and enforcement, they can simply go to another internet service.
“The check and accountability on this power has always been the fact that a service like Twitter is one small part of the larger public conversation happening across the internet. If folks do not agree with our rules and enforcement, they can simply go to another internet service.
“This moment in time might call for this dynamic, but over the long term it will be destructive to the noble purpose and ideals of the open internet. A company making a business decision to moderate itself is different from a government removing access, yet can feel much the same.
“Yes, we all need to look critically at inconsistencies of our policy and enforcement. Yes, we need to look at how our service might incentivize distraction and harm. Yes, we need more transparency in our moderation operations. All this can’t erode a free and open global internet.”

According to the state government the reality TV star and Miss Eradiri are to work together to inspire the girl child in Bayelsa state.

Miss Eradiri is the first female First Class graduate from the Faculty of Law at the Niger Delta University (NDU), a feat she repeated at the Nigerian Law School.
Many Nigerians had called for the Eradiri, a Bayelsa-born First Class Law Graduate, who has not only made Bayelsans proud but the entire Izon nation on her excellent performance at the Niger Delta University and the Nigerian Law School, Lagos Campus.
Some also argued that Eradiri has distinguished herself and should be the ‘Role Model’ to Bayelsa Youths.

First lady Melania Trump made her first comments Monday, 11 January, about the violence at the Capitol when pro-Trump rioters stormed the building last week.

In a lengthy written statement posted to the white house website, she said that her heart goes out to the six people who have died since the attack, including two Capitol police officers.

The first lady added that: “Our Nation must heal in a civil manner. Make no mistake about it, I absolutely condemn the violence that has occurred on our Nation’s Capitol. Violence is never acceptable.
Melania, however, implored people to stop violence and never make assumptions based on the color of a person’s skin or use differing political ideologies as a basis for aggression and viciousness.
She added that it was inspiring to see that so many have found a passion and enthusiasm in participating in an election, “but we must not allow that passion to turn to violence. Our path forward is to come together, find our commonalities, and be the kind and strong people that I know we are.”
However, Melania Trump made no mention of those who are responsible for inciting the violence last Wednesday.
The first lady also said nothing about the calls for vice president Mike Pence, with the help of Trump’s Cabinet, to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office or the plan by house democrats to possibly impeach him for a second time.
She said it’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the first lady.
While Melania has largely stayed quiet during her husband’s attempts to defy the election result, she has echoed the president’s misleading language of counting legal votes and has not publicly acknowledged Biden’s victory.

Nigerian man based in Netherland has recount how he was allegedly extorted by Nigerian police for being with a laptop.
According to the Twitter user Femi, some police officer allegedly extorted N100k from him after asking him to initially pay N500k for carrying a laptop on his way to the airport.
Recounting the incident, Femi said he was on his way to the airport today, January 14 when the incident happened. After they search him and couldn’t pin him with a crime, they insisted he followed them to the station for carrying two laptops.
“Earlier today, officers of @PoliceNG robbed me of 100k in the presence of my wife. My only crime was having my official laptop with me. They couldn’t pin any crime on me so they insisted I follow them to station or pay 500k. I was running late for my flight, so I had to be…
“I tweeted this just before my flight took off, so I didn’t see the replies until now that I’m home. A few people have reached out to me about the issue and I will reply once I settle in. I appreciate the support from everyone.”
“For the sake of transparency, I will drop details about the event including payment methods and receipts. I also want to categorically state that I was very cooperative and engaging. My communication was totally aimed at de-escalation.”
The software engineers berates some Twitter users who asked why he paid the money, after they insinuated that he had something to hide since he paid the police officers the money.
In response to his critics, Femi revealed that he works in Netherland as a software engineer and that not an internet scammer as many presumed.
“I’ve seen comments insinuating that I tweeted half truth, some are blaming me for paying while others think I had a skeleton in my cupboard. Omo mo phor o 😂. This is how typical Nigerians think: We choose to blame victims of unfortunate situations rather than give them justice.”
“First of all, I’m a software engineer previously with @Andela and now with @BrightComputing in Netherlands. I AM NOT A YAHOO BOY AND I WILL NEVER BE ONE. I only came home for Christmas and was returning to my base and I know better than to let Nigerian police delay me.”
He also revealed that when he was stopped, the alleged police men accused his and his wife of not putting on a mask as he admitted that they were not wearing a nose mask like the police officers said.
However, he said he explained that they were rushing to meet up with his flight and that he showed them a pack of nose masks and bottle sanitizer they had but that the officers later proceeded to search his luggage.
    Sharing his story in a long Twitter threads, he wrote;
“When the police stopped us at 7/8 bus top, they first accused my wife and I of not wearing nose masks. Indeed we didn’t, but that was only because we were in a rush. I explained this and even showed them a pack of masks and a bottle of sanitizer.
“They proceeded to check my luggage, then asked what I was doing with two laptops. I explained that one was my personal computer and the other was official. They demanded to see my company id, and I further explained my company does not issue id since it’s almost…
“irrelevant. However, I showed them my NL residential permit as a proof that I live and work over there. It was at this point that they stopped talking and got into the Bolt ride with me. Then two others got into their rickety korope bus and we followed.
“After about 300m, we drove into a street opposite Ajao Estate junction and drove for about 150m. All while asking me to pay 500k. I told them I needed to catch a flight but my words fell on deaf ears. They kept yelling and at a point stopped my ride and asked me to get.
“In their bus. I knew getting in the bus would fuck me up – on a good day, I drag with police but I didn’t have the luxury of time – so I had to find a solution quick. We started negotiating my release. I went as low as 50k but they would rather bundle me in their bus than take.”
a measly 50k. After we agreed on 100, they took me on a bike me to an access bank ATM,  a few meters from where we parked – where I withdrew 80k. Because I had earlier made some withdrawals, I couldn’t go pass 80k, so I was taken to a Paga shop – also within the axis – where I withdrew the last 20,400 (400 being the charge for paga transaction). Now that they had the money, they started acting all nice and brotherly. One even asked for my complementary card, while another jokingly remarked “Guy, your wife dey panick o”.
“I cannot identify these officers by name, neither can I identify their vehicle (a silly mistake on my part), however, I recognize the faces of the two that really engaged me. This is my submission.”

Meanwhile, he also shared evidence of the five bank transactions he made. See screenshot below.

The US House of Representative passed on Tuesday evening a resolution urging Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to expel President Donald Trump from office.
Pence has said he would not yield to the calls.

The Democratic-run chamber, anticipating the vice president’s resistance, was already barreling ahead with plans to impeach Trump on Wednesday for an unprecedented second time.
With just over a week left in Trump’s tumultuous one-term presidency, Democratic lawmakers from Texas and beyond — joined by a small but growing number of Republicans — were channeling their fury over the Capitol insurrection into a frenetic attempt to secure Trump’s removal.
The House voted 223-205, along near-strict party lines, in support of the 25th Amendment resolution.
Several Lone Star State conservatives cautioned against proceeding down such a path.
But some Democrats barely contained their outrage over the GOP’s calls for unity, days after Trump and his allies spurred a riot amid Trump’s baseless claims of a stolen election.
President Trump on his won part criticized the potential impeachment as a “continuation of the greatest witch hunt in the history of politics.”
Pence effectively ended the debate as it was ongoing on Capitol Hill, telling Pelosi late Tuesday that the “25th Amendment is not a means of punishment or usurpation” and that “invoking the 25th Amendment in such a manner would set a terrible precedent.”

US President Donald Trump is under fire after he reportedly said to his Vice-President Mike Pence he can either go down in history as a patriot or a pussy.

According to a New York Times report, hours before the Capitol riots, President Trump took one last stab at convincing Vice President Mike Pence to try and overturn the election—telling him, “You can either go down in history as a patriot, or you can go down in history as a pussy.”
After Pence rebuffed Trump and headed to the Capitol to oversee the Electoral College count, Trump blasted him in the speech that incited a mob to storm the building.
The Times reports that after Pence was evacuated to the basement, Trump never called to check on his safety, instead attacking him on Twitter.
The newspaper says that five days after the riots, Pence returned to the West Wing and was invited that evening to meet with Trump. “The official description of the hourlong conversation was ‘good’; the unofficial description was ‘nonsubstantive’ and ‘stilted,’” the Times wrote.

The date, 15 January of every year, is a significant day for Nigerians, especially serving military personnel, ex-servicemen and women, their families, and friends.

It is also meaningful to families and friends of those gallant service personnel who paid the supreme price with their dear lives and those wounded in action.
These unique sets of people voluntarily decided to serve the nation through thick and thin to the extent of being killed or injured either in Nigeria to defend its territorial integrity or elsewhere.
The Armed Forces and Remembrance Day Celebration (AFRDC) is a worldwide phenomenon in which nations set aside a particular day annually to celebrate their Armed Forces. Although most have certain things in common, the date and sequence of events celebrating it varies from one country to another. These standard denominations include prayers, parades, laying of the wreath and charitable activities.
The Armed Forces’ celebrations started with the monarchical context and after that the Versailles treaty in 1919. The celebration is designed and is not by accident, to be in line with the Realists’ theory, belief in military power to fulfil the state’s interest. The Developed World followed the Realists’ philosophy that states that national interests should supersede all other interests. National power denotes military might or power, hence the celebration of the Armed Forces.
The global celebration of the Armed Forces in such a manner in the modern context dates to World War I, which officially ended when the Allied Nations and Germany signed the Versailles Treaty in France on 28 June 1919. However, war hostilities ended seven months earlier, precisely, on 11 November 1918 which has since been observed as the Veterans Day every year, regardless of the day of the week it falls, all over the world, especially among the member states of the Commonwealth.
In line with global trends, Nigeria had celebrated its Armed Forces and Remembrance Day Celebration (AFRDC) in the past on 11 November each year. However, it adopted 15 January every year to celebrate her Armed Forces for some significant historical reasons. Nigeria chooses 15 January to commemorate the day the 3-year Nigerian Civil War officially ended in 1970. The celebration is not misplaced as the worldwide military plays a significant role, especially on any nation’s defence and security issues. Thus, respect for the military in most countries is part of national culture and tradition. The military is a significant part of national power and the last resort in defence and security, so nations strive hard to have a virile and formidable Armed Forces. Here in Nigeria, the military is also a symbol of national unity and its contribution to national unity, peace, security, and development is unquantifiable.
Therefore, the observance of a day like this helps the system pay more attention to the Armed Forces; honour and appreciate them for their sacrifices, patriotism, unflinching love for the country. It will help the citizenry appreciate the service personnel’s willingness to serve and sacrifice for the nation. We owe a debt of gratitude to these courageous men and women in uniform and their families for shouldering a tremendous burden on behalf of us. The gallant officers, soldiers, ratings, airmen, and women voluntarily served and sacrificed their youth and most productive parts of their lives to the nation. In most countries of the world, the military enjoys honour and Constitutional roles on defence and security issues.
Thus, many Nigerians hardly know or understand the significant role of this critical segment of society in the country’s national life and development. The AFN global exploits started when they fought in the two World Wars, civil wars against rebels and enthroned peace and democracy in Congo, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Just recently, they assisted in stabilizing the polity in Ivory Coast, the Gambia and Guinea Bissau. One of the most significant national contributions of the AFN is the Civil War’s success to keep Nigeria as one entity. For the fast ten years, they have been involved in internal security duties to curtail violent extremism, militancy, separatists’ agitations, ethnic and religious conflicts, banditry, kidnapping, while practicing in case of any hostile foreign aggression on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria. They are notwithstanding its continuous participation in peacekeeping and peace support operations in the search for global peace. In performing their duties, some were wounded in action and many have lost their lives so that Nigeria could be peaceful, secured and the citizenry safe in conducting their daily activities. Above all, they have performed marvelously well, thus, deserving commendation.
The Legal Framework which provides for the establishment and consequent deployment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria are in Sections 217 and 218 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As amended), respectively and other subsidiary legislations such as the Armed Forces Act Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2001 and the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service 2017. The primary duty of the AFN is to defend Nigeria from external aggression, maintaining its territorial integrity and securing its borders from violation on land, sea, or air. It is also to suppress insurrection and act in aid of civil authority when called upon by the President and may also perform such other functions as may be prescribed by an Act of the National Assembly. Over the years, the AFN have been discharging its Constitutional duties creditably well despite obvious limitation and distractions occasioned by politicization of security issues. Despite these sterling performances, there is still lack of understanding of the roles of the AFN and noticeable poor cultural affinity with the Nigerian society.
Therefore, the AFN deserve understanding, encouragement, serious and generous commendation, and sincere appreciation by the citizenry, rather than denigration, undue criticisms, abuses, and all forms of negative comments especially from those that ought to know better. The most worrisome aspect is the politicization of security for political expediency rather than national interest. Nigerians, therefore, need to develop the culture and tradition of appreciating the AFN and the veterans, as this personnel on their own have decided to curtail their freedoms and privileges as citizens and lay down their lives for the benefit of humanity and fellow countrymen and women, peace, and development in Nigeria.
It is very disheartening to see some Nigerians denigrating our Armed Forces for inconsequential or unjustifiable reasons. This attitude gave some non-governmental organisations the impetus to continually harass, embarrass, demonize, and paint our gallant Armed Forces in lousy light. A clear example was the International Criminal Court (ICC) and Amnesty International, who were equating them with one of the world’s detested terrorist organisation; Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists’ group. It is essential to know that whatever affects the country’s Armed Forces, equally affects its security architecture. The continued haranguing of the AFN by these organisations is demoralizing and should therefore stop.
As we celebrate these breeds of courageous and gallant people, some of whom are not with us in this world, we need to reflect and appreciate our Armed Forces’ sacrifices and all they have been through to make Nigeria better. They endure hardship, deprivation, safeguarding our lives and properties, risking their lives and yet do not ask for anything other than our collective support, prayers, and respect. In this vein, I enjoin Nigerians to show more understanding, while corporate organisations, institutions and businesses should institute unique treatments for service personnel and our veterans.
To further earn the trust and respect of Nigerians, the AFN must continue to respect human rights and the rule of law. They should be more conscious of their critical role in our Constitution’s defence, guaranteeing peace and security in Nigeria by being more professional and always making the nation proud. The military should exercise more understanding and restraint in their dealings with civilians. They should continue to remain apolitical, professional and bastion of hope in our collective quest for peace and stable democracy in Nigeria.
The politicisation of security issues in the country is counterproductive to our quest for peace and security. The nation should commit more resources to improve the welfare of troops, equipment, and training and enhance the welfare of the families of fallen heroes and those wounded in action. We should also enhance good governance and welfare of the people. The Government should adopt more creative ways of conflict resolution and create an enabling environment for peaceful coexistence among Nigerians devoid of circumstances that are excavating the security situation in the country that warrants the military’s deployment. Leaders should know that most conflicts are resolved through dialogue. They should therefore explore mechanisms of solving disputes that could make resort to military efforts more effective.
I join millions of well-meaning and patriotic Nigerians to celebrate our Armed Forces today and always. Happy Armed Forces and Remembrance Day Celebrations 2021 to our gallant and patriotic Armed Forces of Nigeria and their families. May the gentle souls of our fallen heroes continue to rest in peace, amen.

Outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump has “unequivocally condemned” the breach of Congress by his supporters, as he said it wasn’t something any true supporter of his should do.
This was the first time Trump would be publicly condemning the riot, as he punished punishments for offenders.

Protesters loyal to President Trump stormed the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, halting Congress’s counting of the electoral votes to confirm President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory as the police evacuated lawmakers from the building. The incident left five persons dead and several others injured.
Expressly condemning the riots, Trump in a video message posted by the White House on Twitter said the vandalism had no place in his Make America Great Again movement, which he said had always been about defending the rule of law.
“Mob violence goes against everything I believe in, and everything our movement stands for.
“No true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence; no true supporter of mine could ever disrespect law enforcement or our great American flag.
“No true supporter of mine could ever threaten or harass their fellow Americans.
“If you do any of these things, you are not supporting our movement, you are attacking it, and you are attacking our country,” he said.
Emphasising that those involved in the Capitol attack would be brought to justice, Trump called for peace and national reconciliation.
He said it was time for everyone who believed in “our agenda” to start thinking of ways to ease tensions and calm tempers.
The president said he had received security briefing on reports of additional demonstrations being planned in Washington and across the country in the coming days.
He cautioned against violence and any other form of criminality, adding that he had directed law enforcement agencies to spare no resources in maintaining order.
Trump also commented on his ban on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms, describing it as an “unprecedented assault on free speech”.

However, Wolves midfielder, Ruben Neves was on hand to restore parity for the hosts in the 14th minute.
Everton later got the maximum points on offer through Michael Keane’s 76th-minute goal to win the away tie 2-1.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said Nigerians who fail to pray for the security of the country might be guilty of prolonging the war and insecurity recorded in the country.
According to him, many Nigerians don’t pray for the troops in the frontline in their daily prayers. He said that many Nigerians only pray for money, promotion, enemies and that they don’t remember the soldiers who fight to insure peace across the country.
    In an article titled, ‘The Decent for the Indecent, the Just for the Unjust’ written to mark the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Adesina said;
“But victory is from God alone. That is what we must realise as Nigerians. Do we ever pray for our troops in the frontlines? Do we remember those youths, our pride, and strength, faced by death daily, as we sleep in the comfort of our homes, ensconced in the tender bosom of our wives.
As we pray; God give me money. Give me a car. Give me a promotion. Kill my enemies. Do it now. Do we ever remember our soldiers? Ere you left your room this morning, did you think to pray…did you pray for our soldiers? Victory comes from God alone. If you don’t pray, you may be guilty of prolonging the war in North-East, North-west, North-central, and all over Nigeria.
Yes, victory is from God alone. But do some people know? Does it ever enter into their consciousness? They only wail: ‘this insurgency war has lasted too long. The banditry has demystified our military. They are cowards. The top guns don’t even want the battle to end.
They are making money in billions.’ Okay. Making money in billions and wasting our soldiers, our youths, our future and hope, in their hundreds and thousands because of blood money. That is all some people see; permanent cynics and sceptics, who know nothing of altruism, and whose God is their belly. They think only of pecuniary gain, nothing else”
Adesina also urges said Nigerians to appreciate the military during the Armed forces remembrance day rather than criticize them.

Umar-Dikko added that the illegal status of the building became a very separate matter from the trigger event, the third-party elements who had planned and advertised an unlawful gathering purportedly at the restaurant.

Protests in Oyo, Osun over fuel price, electricity tariff hike“That is how they normally talk. They will say they are doing it in our interest, but it’s all lies. How much am I earning? Don’t I have a family to take care of? This is callous of them.
“While governments of other countries are trying to make life better for their people, here, they want to choke us with increase in this and that.
“Everything keeps increasing but the minimum wage doesn’t increase,” Mr Hammed, a 47-year-old carpenter told Information Nigeria while reacting to the increase in fuel price and electricity tariff.
As Nigerians went about their daily activities despite the restraints caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, hoping to surmount the challenges brought about by the unexpected tragedies witnessed in the year 2020, the subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PNPPC), announced an increase in the ex-depot price of fuel from N138.62 to N151.56 per litre.
A few hours later, the price was adjusted to N147.67. The ex-depot price is the price at which the product is sold to marketers at the depots.
This announcement comes shortly after the increase in electricity tariff that welcomed Nigerians into the month of September. Although this has been described to be in the best interest of the populace, the thought of having to pay more, despite slashed salaries and unreliable power supply has become quite difficult to bear for many Nigerians.
The assurance of Oyebode Fadipe, general manager of corporate communications at Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, that “the Service Reflective Tariff (SRT) plan is a NERC mandated tariff structure whereby an upward increment in tariffs will result in substantially longer hours of power supply, good quality voltage profile, swifter response to faults clearing and provision of pre-paid meters” is not sufficient to assuage the thought of tariff-induced burden growing in the mind of  Mr Hammed who told Information Nigeria that the government is on a wanton mission to further impoverish his ilk.

Nigerians, known for doggedness and tenacity during tough periods, could not but worry over the state of economic affairs of the country. However, the increase in fuel price was bound to happen, considering that the government had announced in March that there would be subsidy removal on petrol in order to hand over the reins of importation to private companies such that market forces would begin to determine the retail price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
The PNPPC’s adjustment of the ex-depot price twice within a few hours, inevitably caused varied retail prices at different filling stations across the country. Some filling stations in Lagos state sold at N161 per litre while others sold at N159 per litre. However, the uniform price of N151 soon took effect.
Gas retailer, Christopher Okafor, is not convinced by the official statement from the ruling party. He tells Information Nigeria that he is displeased with the government’s move but is optimistic that better days would return.
He said: “If I tell you that I’m happy with the increase in the price of petrol, I will be the biggest liar on earth. It displeases me to my heart. Why now during COVID, when there is increase in the prices of other commodities? It is very unfair to us, but as usual, we will pull through.”
A 45-year-old beauty salon owner who pleaded anonymity, told Information Nigeria that she is fed up with the electricity billing. She has just one hairdryer in her small shop but her electricity bills run into N40,000 per month.
    “This is exhausting”, she begins.
“But what am I to do?” She laughs for a while, probably trying not to let the burden get the better part of her.
“This is my only source of livelihood. I have to support my husband. I can’t stay idle. Now there is a tariff increase, it’s crazy. What can the masses do? What am I selling? That they want to finish me with such bills.”
Bimbo Oyemade, 37, female, is concerned about those who have lost their jobs during this period and how they would be able to afford to purchase fuel at the new price.
“I lost my aunty during this COVID. As if that was not enough, I was also among those laid off from work as a result of the pandemic. Is it now that I’m supposed to be paying so much for fuel and electricity that I am not even enjoying?
“So, other people in my shoes would also have to face this kind of hardship. I can only imagine how parents who have school fees to pay would be coping during this period. I am still trying to survive from having to purchase food items at a costlier price. I am fed up. And what’s worse is that we can’t do anything about it. We are meant to believe it’s in our own interest. Pathetic!”

41-year-old Pastor Kenneth tells Information Nigeria that he concurs with the tweet posted by President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu. In response to the PDP’s statement that the fuel price and electricity tariff increase would be unbearable for Nigerians, Shehu had tweeted thus: “Don’t allow the PDP to deceive you. Amidst acute shortages, they sold petrol at N600 per litre on Easter Sunday in 2013 (See Punch published on that day).”
“We will soon realize that this is for the best. The PDP that are now acting as saints did not do any better. In fact, they wrecked what the APC are now trying to amend. How do we expect the government to keep paying subsidy at the expense of other state-owned corporations? Think about it. That is why we will have to understand the move is a smart one, for the ultimate good of everyone”, he says.

Traders and buyers at Ikeja Computer VillageGbenga Odunsi, Lagos
“If you see how people patronise traders at computer village, you would marvel at their level of recklessness, and wonder if coronavirus indeed exists. There’s no social distancing, the provision of soap and water are not in place, both buyers and sellers hardly use face masks. Imagine one COVID-19 patient visiting this market today”.
A concerned Lagosian — Omidiji Olamide, male, 32 — passed the above remark at Computer village in Ikeja area of Lagos, following the way and manner crowd at the technology market violated laid down COVID-19 guidelines.
For several months, Lagos, with a population of about 20 million people, has recorded a high number of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria, while Abuja, the nation’s capital followed suit. It is, however, surprising that most residents — aware of these figures — throw caution to the wind by refusing to comply with the set guidelines for preventing the spread of the virus.
In May, following the gradual easing of the lockdown in Lagos state, the government had issued new guidelines for the reopening of markets and shopping malls as part of efforts to curb the spread of the pandemic. The state government said that all markets and stores in the various Local Governments/Local Council Development Areas across the metropolis will be allowed to open from 9 a.m till 3 p.m on selected days.
It further mandated the use of face masks for everyone attending these markets and stores as well as take preventive measures such as social distancing and high levels of personal and respiratory hygiene.
Here’s why Coronavirus cases keep increasing in Lagos
Computer village, a technology market located in Ikeja area of Lagos, is one of the largest, most visited and crowded markets in the state. Others are: Yaba market, Obalende, Alaba international market, Ajah Market, Obalende, Balogun Market, Idumota, Oyingbo, Mile 12, Isale Eko Market, among others.

When Information Nigeria arrived at computer village in Ikeja, it was difficult to tell if the crowd were aware of the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the state. Traders went about their usual businesses unperturbed and without caution, not minding social distancing appeal by the government. Buyers trooped into the market in their thousands with no face masks.
A light-skinned lady who simply identified herself as Oyinade, a 400-level student of the University of Lagos, expressed regrets of visiting the market. According to her, she would have rather ordered her goods via online e-commerce than risking her life at Computer village.
“When I set out to get a laptop at Computer village, I already knew I would meet a lot of people at the market, but then, I was expecting a little bit of social distancing but where is it?
“There is nothing of such here. Zero facemasks! All I can see here are jaw masks. Everyone is protecting their jaw.
“I see a lot of people hugging and shaking hands, maintaining close contact while talking to each other with their mask under their jaw.
“A while ago, I saw people dragging wears, cloth sellers dragging you to buy from them. Again, zero physical distancing. Infact, I regret coming to this place and I can’t wait to get the laptop and leave this place, please.”
Another resident, Babatunde Ayodeji, an accountant, says: “There is no social distancing at computer village or any of the major markets in Lagos.
“That is why Bishop David Oyedepo is shouting government down.
“Same people that go to market come to church, so why give churches maximum time to operate, which does not apply to markets. For lack of social distancing, who should be arrested in the market? The seller or the buyers?
“Our government should be blamed for a copy and paste approach to the COVID-19 pandemic. Is it only market that violated social distancing? Even the federal government violated it during the burial of Abba Kyari, the late Chief of staff to President Buhari.
“You tell people and bus to carry half capacity, yet the Lagos state BRT is on full load. Is the BRT immuned?
“There should have been an avenue for rapid and increased testing procedures so that more COVID-19 patients can be ascertained and treated. Kogi has opened worship centres since more two months now, do they have cases up to Lagos. Our leaders are our bane”, he added.
Lagos Computer Village COVID-19 guidelines severely murdered
No face mask, no entry Only two gates will be opened “IN” shall be Otigba gate by Awolowo road, while “OUT” will be Kodeshp gate by metro quarters. All pedestrian gates shall be opened. Cars are not allowed into the market except for delivery and pickup trucks/vans. No street trading until virus is completely contained. Shop owners are advised to maintain NCDC 60% crowd control in offices. (Customers and staffs inclusive). Each building should enforce “No Loitering, No Hawking”. Failure will attract sealing of building by Lagos State government. Shop owners must provide sanitizers for their customer use. Trading time shall be 9am to 2.30am as the market is expected to be locked by 2-m Market task force shall go round to monitor compliance.  The above guidelines were put in place by the market board of Computer Village, under the leadership of the Babaloja, Adeniyi Olasoji and Iyaloja, Abisola Azeez. Some of the rules were meant to guide both shop owners and buyers on ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Information Nigeria, however, observed that not all the laid rules were strictly adhered to.
Lagos computer village: No face masks, no physical distancingWhile there are protocols guiding reopening of Computer village, it appears that traders and buyers are tired of observing the protocols, hence the violation of the rules set to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
For instance, the first rule on the list was largely flouted by both shop owners and buyers. With the “No mask, No Entry” rule, Lagosians trooped into the technology market without masks. No one, not even a soul, was apprehended at the gate this reporter observed for not wearing a mask.
Further, the fifth rule was also heavily violated in the market. Street trading took place in its fullest form, and none of the violators were apprehended or fined for a fee. Numbers 7, 8, and 9 were also flouted by traders in the market. Some buildings housing shops and offices inside the market had no signage warning of no loitering or hawing, except for banks and some others within the vicinity; some of the shops visited by Information Nigeria had no hand sanitizer in place for customer use. Above all, there is a zero level of social and physical distancing at Computer Village.

A shop owner — who is also one of the market executives and craved anonymity — bemoaned the low level of compliance, especially among the market traders who have been briefed on guidelines and protocols
“That’s why the virus keeps increasing in Lagos everyday. Just take a look at everyone in the market.
“Yes, we are all here to hustle and make a living, but at least their should be a level of precautionary measures in place. People should ensure their safety first. Na person wey dey alive go enjoy him money. I really hope the market board will do something about this before it gets out of hand.”
NCDC recommendations violated in other parts of Lagos
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC recommends that people wear masks in public places and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. Face masks are most likely to reduce the spread of COVID-19 when they are widely used by people in public places. The agency also recommends the use of hand sanitizer; regular washing of hands with soap and water; and practising social distancing
COVID-19 can be spread by people who do not have symptoms and do not know that they are infected. That’s why it’s important for everyone to wear masks in public settings and practice social distancing (staying at least 6 feet away from other people).
A visit to other parts of the state, including Yaba market evinces large gatherings of persons in violation of guidelines provided by the NCDC. Traders and buyers in the market crash into one another with reckless abandon. Commercial buses, private car owners and taxis were still crowded.
Zero physical distancing inside Lagos BRT on full load. Some of the traders interviewed gave reasons on why it is a herculean task to comply with the new rules on handwashing, wearing of face masks, among others.
“How is it possible to control millions of people who come to the market? Enforcing these rules do not seem like a possible task, which is why I do not support the lifting of lockdown, especially in Lagos,” says Mrs Nwabufo, 45, who runs a clothing store in Yaba market.
    Computer Village market board reacts
Speaking with Information Nigeria, the Iyaloja of Computer village, Mrs Abisola Azeez, says the market has done a lot to ensure that the market complies with laid down COVID-19 guidelines.
“Before the reopening of the market, we made sure we put signage on all the six entrances, we have shared a lot of free facemasks to both shop owners and buyers. We have handwashing equipment at all the six entrances, and testers, too.
“But as time went on, people tend to relax on the rules and regulations. All these rules and regulations were strictly adhered to when the market reopened and we made sure that no one entered the market without face masks. That is the best we have been able to do since the market reopened.
Iyaloja Abisola Azeez. Source: Mediapoint“Also, when we try to impose the laid down rules government provided, traders in the market bring in ethnicity and begin to fight the authority. We don’t want any issue to generate, that is why we have relaxed the market orders for now.
We are planning to engage the government to let them know the challenge we are having, so they know this is not a market board law, but Lagos State law. So when people don’t comply with the laws, it is the government that will come and impose the law themselves.”
On his part, the Public Relations Officer of the market, Mr Godwin Enamoh, dismissed reports that visitors enter the market without face masks. According to him, the market board stationed taskforce at the entrances of market to enforce ‘no face masks no entry policy’.
“Can you tell me which of the gates you noticed this? Enamoh queried.
“We have taskforce at every entrance of the market and their duty is to ensure that people who come into the market put on face masks. As a matter of fact, there are people who sell facemasks at the gates, so if you don’t have one, you buy.
“If you come to my office, you will find a lot of hand sanitizers. Same applies to most of the offices inside the market.
“On many occasions, we have had to settle fight between the taskforce and violators. I would like you to come to the market again to show me the places you visited and observed the violation of COVID-19 guidelines,” Enamoh says, after Information Nigeria told him there are footages to support the claim.
Mr Enamoh, however, admitted that it was difficult to control social distancing of people in the market.
